Know

Q: Where can you go for helpful assistance in citing specific sources in a specific style?

A: Your assignments in EN101, your spiral bound "writer's handbook" from EN101 - use for all courses, WC Academic Resources Center (Robinson), Watson Librarians at the Ask Us! Desk,  official citation/writing handbooks/manuals at Watson Library,  or OWL website.  If, after seeking these types of  assistance, you still have questions, visit your faculty member during office hours and discuss your questions.

Plagiarism

What to do?  Three parts - watch video, read college policies and faculty policies.

1. ENJOY THIS VIDEO (16 min. 27 sec.) :  DIAGNOSIS - PLAGIARISM http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=n3_tin1ik6E

NOT for the sqeamish!  Explore what happens when Yavapai College (AZ) student, Ima Tryin, makes a trip to the Plagiarism Clinic and discovers the importance of citing sources in this tutorial.

Plagiarism is that ethical lapse where you have blundered in the use of source content or in citing sources? What three (3) techniques for working with your sources, if done with care, will help you avoid plagiarism?

Note:  Correct citations show respect for your source researchers/writers and guide your readers to the full text of your sources. Cite all sources, including those in public domain and under open use licenses.

2. WILMINGTON COLLEGE POLICY ON PLAGIARISM

(5 min.) Read and become familiar to the Wilmington College Policy on Plagiarism - What is it, what are the procedures to address it, what are the penalties?

Student Handbook - Check your WC Handbook for students enrolled in Cincy programs and courses.

3.  SYLLABI:  (5 min.)  Review the statements about plagiarism in each of your course syllabi.

The Basics of Copyright

1.  Every piece of writing, photography, artwork, film, and media has a copyright status.  Copyright is complex but is critical to understand if you are thinking of using the work of another in your own work.  [Scholars and careful text or web creators always cite sources, regardless of copyright status.]  Some sources belong to others and there are limitations and rules on how these sources may be borrowed for use in your profession or work.

Here is a helpful website (know US and International copyright law):

United State Copyright Office (and the Law)

2.  Your work (writing, projects, photography, creative expression) is copyrighted automatically under US law.  Even though you are a student, you must be consulted on how your work may be reused or repurposed.  You may grant specific permissions without giving up your rights.
