Graduate Programs: Master of Science (MS) in Athletic Training: Evidence-Based Practice Sites, AMA Style, and Reference Managers

Citing Sources in Athletic Training

The accepted format for citing research in athletic training is the American Medical Association (AMA) Manual of Style.  You can find the print version in Watson Library's Reference Collection.

Citing a journal article?  You must use the PubMed journal title abbreviation, found here in the NCBI databases.

In the EBSCO databases (SportDiscus, Medline with Full Text, CINAHL, and others), there is an AMA citation formatter.  From the individual article screen, choose "Cite" from the Tools menu, right hand side.  AMA will be the second selection.  You can also use the Email link there to email the citation (and article, if available) to yourself.

EBSCO citation formats can be a helpful start, but may need fine-tuning.  Check the AMA Manual of Style or consult your faculty or a librarian if you have questions.

Reference Managers for AMA Style

Using Firefox as your browser, you can collect, organize and cite your citations in Zotero, a free application. Once downloaded, go to Preferences, choose the Styles button from the menu, and select American Medical Association.

Mendeley.com allows you to create an account for managing your references and storing documents -- up to 2GB of web storage.
