New Resources for 2023

In August, while we were developing and launching our new website, we conducted an inventory of our online subscriptions. We found that we were entitled to many more resources than we were aware of as an OhioLink member. After this thorough evaluation, we were able to add many new eBook collections, full-text databases, and online journals to our existing”A to Z” list.  In total, we have increased access to our subscribed resources by 48% since bringing our new website online.

Additional to gaining access to what we already subscribed to, we have also started to expand our electronic holdings with new subscriptions.  Most recently, we’ve added campus-wide access to The Chronicle of Higher Education and Access World News NewsBank.  With NewsBank, we now have online access to hundreds of national and international newspapers.  Locally, we now have access to Wilmington News Journal, The Dayton Daily News, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, Washington Court House Record Herald, and the Times-Gazette in Hillsboro.

Clinton County Reads

This year, the Watson Library is a proud member of the “Clinton County Reads” county-wide big read initiative.  Voting is ongoing until January 14th and you can cast your vote online.  Please take a moment to pick from one of the five interesting titles this year.  The winner will be announced in late January with programs relating to the selected title happening this Spring.

New Library Tutorial Video and Library History Page

In November and December, we released two new items on our website.  The first is a great Library Introduction video for full-time faculty and adjuncts, which can be located on our Faculty Resources page.  The second is our new Library History page, which contains amazing links and information about the history of our Wilmington College libraries.  Special thanks to Elizabeth House and Lee Bowman for their fine work on these projects.

Ready or not, here comes ChatGPT...

Ahh…  Artificial Intelligence.  Whether you think it is an interesting idea of science fiction that has come to save our existence, or a boondoggle of human ingenuity that will lead to the collapse of humanity, it arrived in its most consumable form last month.  ChatGPT, a project of the OpenAI initiative went live in December with a tremendous amount of fanfare and concern, especially from those who work in education and libraries.  We have been experimenting with ChatGPT for the past few weeks and have seen some amazingly useful (and scary) results.

For researchers and writers, there is some cause for concern, especially as our students could possibly use AI to shortcut assignments.  An artificial intelligence evaluation platform called Crossplag is also a recent development.  Crossplag promises the ability to detect the use of AI by students and authors.

To learn more, it’s best to try both of these yourself…  For ChatGPT, ask it something like…

“Write John an email about the lower sales this month.”

or

“What is the impact of fossil fuels on poverty?”

or

“How do I install my own AI chatbot?”

Then, take whatever result you get and paste those into Crossplag .  No matter the result, take some time to familiarize yourself with these new (and free) tools.  They certainly show promise for changing how we teach, research, and learn in the years ahead.
