A good general-purpose database (and the one probably demonstrated in your library instruction) is Academic Search Complete.
For agriculture studies, the other database to start with is usually Agricola.
Academic Search Complete includes rigorous curation and indexing of open access (OA) journals, which has resulted in a growing collection of 5,217 active global OA journals. Once validated and certified for inclusion, these OA journals are treated with high-quality subject indexing and sophisticated, precise/accurate full-text linking.

In addition to Agricola, we have several other databases very useful for agriculture research.
Produced by CABI, CAB Abstracts is the leading English-language abstracts information service providing access to the world’s applied life sciences literature.
In addition to indexing thousands of core scientific journals, CAB Abstracts offers extensive coverage of non-journal literature from around the world including annual reports, general reports, books, conference proceedings, field notes and much more.

The OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center (EJC) is a full text searchable database of electronic journal articles from more than 11,000 academic journals from top scholarly publishers, academic societies and university presses. The EJC covers a wide range of disciplines and contains just published scientific research as well as historical journal articles. New articles are added daily.
Depending on the topic, you may also want to search a database that is not directly related to agriculture. For example, there may be articles in an education-focused database that are useful for an ag-ed topic.
MEDLINE (PubMed) provides free access to MEDLINE, the NLM database of more than 11 million bibliographic citations and abstracts in the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, health care systems, and preclinical sciences. Includes access to additional selected life sciences journals not in MEDLINE. Links to the full-text of articles at participating publishers web sites. Links to the molecular biology databases maintained by NCBI. Interface developed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), located at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Links to full-text of selected articles are available using this URL to access PubMed.
